Home Theater Solution
Review By: Hi-Fi on Dec. 3, 2004
Good: Good solid choice for the all in one package.
Bad: Setup for the novice will take some time and effort.

Review Summary: I have to say that I am really well pleased with the system that I bought. I was in the market for a big upgrade to my home theater system but I wanted an all in one solution. Well, this is the one to get. It has more than enough power for a middle sized living room and great sound. I was upgrading from an AIWA stereo system with surround sound. What a huge difference between the two systems. The Yamaha has a nice clean and crisp sound with very clear dialouge coming from the center speaker. All of the speakers sound very nice. I have not pushed the volume to its limits but I will say that it is plenty loud and clear. I did buy optical digital cables for the audio inputs from the DVD player and from my cable box. I recommend that you do it as well. The Peter Gabriel concert that was on Cable in High Definition looked great on my big screen and sounded absolutely wonderful.

I used Red, Blue, Green component connectors for the video. I also bought a 100 ft. spool of Monster brand speaker wire. Suffice it to say, 100 ft. wasn't quite enough wire to put the speakers exactly where I wanted them in the room but I can take care of that at a later time. The speaker wire that comes with the system is 18 gauge, I think, and not nearly enough to cover a mid-sized living room.

The instruction manuals are fairly skimpy and don't go into great deal explaining all of the nifty features and modes that your system can do. So, plan on experimenting alot or reading up on the internet about what your system can do for you. It does plenty. The setup for the sysetem is straight forward. I consider myself to be above average in electronics and setups. Even at that, I spent about 4-5 hours unpacking, reading manuals, stripping wires, hanging speakers, and eventually, trouble shooting my setup. Novice people may want an extra hand with the setup but even without help, you should be able to plow through it. Make sure you give yourself about 4-5 hours if you are solo. After it is all together, you will want to have your cable box/sattelite manual and TV manual on hand to make sure that your connections will work together. It also helps aid any trouble shooting issues you may have at the end.

The remote control for the receiver isn't very good. There are no simple instrucitons for it and at this point, I think that I will have to change the AM/FM bands by using the component's front panel. The DVD remote is o.k. is very similar to any other DVD remote that you will find on other products. The progressive scanning option on the DVD player isn't the default option. Spend some time going through the DVD on screen setup to configure it for 16:9 for widescreen and progressive scanning. There are also some audio options on the DVD on screen setup and it would do you good to look at that as well.

I've watched my favorite DVD movie, Saving Private Ryan, within the last 24 hours. The audio was even better than what I could hear in the theatre. There was dialouge that I heard this time around that I never heard before. The surround sound was awesome with the special effects as well. The progressive scanning brings out some colors and lighting effects that weren't visible before. I am quite impressed. Just wished the setup was a tad easier and that the receiver remote was better. I highly recommend picking up (2) optical digital cables (one for your DVD player connection and one for the cable box connection), (3) component cables (RED, BLUE and GREEN for the DVD connection, CAble box connection, and to hook it all to the TV), and it least 150 ft. of high quality speaker wire (enough to run it through a mid sized living room and put the speakers exactly where you want them.)
